The Regent Men’s Soccer Team on Friday, March 27, 2015 were crowned Soccer Champions at the 2015 PUSAG Games and Festival.
PUSAG Games is an annual sporting event that brings together teams from various Private Universities in Ghana to compete in various sporting activities.
It is organized by the Private Universities Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG), the umbrella body for students in private tertiary institutions in Ghana.
This year’s edition of the PUSAG Games was held from the 24th to 27th of March at Paa Joe Stadium, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. It had Unibank as its title sponsor.
The 2015 PUSAG Games and Festival saw 18 Private University teams from across the country battle it out in various sporting activities including basketball, volleyball, table tennis and other track and field events.
Newly Crowned Champions:
The Regent Men’s Football Team emerged victorious in the final match which saw them face Methodist University College. The Regent team dominated the whole game, defeating the team from Methodist University College 1-0. Regent's Moses Raymond Oko, who was also the highest goal scorer of the soccer tournament, scored the winning goal of the match.
Representing Regent-Ghana, Elikem Kuwornu, a level 400 student, won 1st place in the Triple Jump, High Jump and Long Jump categories.
In all, the Regent Sports Team won three gold medals, one bronze medal and the Soccer Cup during the PUSAG Games. Regent also placed third in Volleyball, and was among the top five teams in discus throw (men), shot put (women) and table tennis (Men and Women) competitions respectively.
The Sports Team later presented the Soccer Cup to the University. Receiving the Cup on behalf of the institution; the President and Founder of the University, Prof. E.K. Larbi congratulated the team for their sterling performance, and for lifting the University’s flag high during the Games.
In his congratulatory message, Mr. Albert Amonoo, Senior Vice President of the University assured the team that the University will invest in building a sports facility at the Main Campus at McCarthy Hill that would help cater to the training needs of the team.
Victor Adu-Boahen, Deputy Chairman of the Regent Sports Committee had this to say: "On behalf of the committee, we thank the entire Regent Sports Team for their hard work and dedication towards achieving success at the just ended 2015 PUSAG Games and Festival”
He added, “We congratulate all the other winners and participants who represented their Universities in various disciplines. Indeed, they exhibited good sportsmanship throughout the tournament."
"We urge the team to continue working hard to improve and win more trophies and medals, thus raising the flag of Regent-Ghana high.” Victor said.
