SIMS 3533: Introduction to Probability and Statistics


The course  will introduce the student to some terminologies and basic definitions used in statistics; data collection techniques; methods used in the organization and presentation of data; description of data using statistical tools; calculating and interpreting statistical measures; determining sample spaces, event spaces, and calculate the measure of certainty of different types of events, especially, dependent and independent events.



  1. Demonstrate knowledge of statistical terms and definitions.
  2. Differentiate between the two branches of statistics.
  3. Identify types of data.
  4. Identify the measurement level for each variable.
  5. Organize data using frequency distribution.
  6. Represent data in frequency distributions graphically using histogram, frequency polygons, and gives.
  7. Summarize data using measures of central tendency, such as the mean, median, mode and midrange.
  8. Describe data using measures of variation such as the range, variance and standard deviation.
  9. Identify the position of a data value in a dataset, using various measures of position such as percentiles, deciles and quartiles.
  10. Describe the shape of a distribution using measures such as skewness and kurtosis.
  11. Determine sample spaces and find the probability of an event, using classical probability or empirical probability.
  12. Find the probability of compound events, using the addition rules.
  13. Find the probability of compound events, using the multiplication rule.
  14. Find the conditional probability of an event.
  15. Find the total number of outcomes in a sequence of events, using the fundamental counting rule.



Students are expected to attend and participate in class.
