SOMA 1523 Business Law

This course introduces the students to the systems of courts and the administration of justice. It also covers the following topics: formation of contracts, contractual terms, void and voidable contracts, discharge and remedies for breach of contract, contracts of employment, the court and tribunal system, the legal profession, sources of law, general principles of Law of Tort, consumer protection, functions of agencies, sale of goods and export sales. Emphasis will be placed on negotiable instruments, bailment and carriage of goods, commercial disputes, industrial and intellectual property and competitive law.

 

SOMA 1533: Introduction to Management

Every student of business must understand the underpinnings of management as the foundation on which all other business courses are grounded. This course introduces the student to the fundamental concepts, principles and practices of modern management. Emphasis would be placed on the integration of contemporary issues to traditional management functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. It also focuses working in groups or teams and how conflicts are managed within organizations. The course will help students appreciate on management applications at workplace and as the main resource for social and economic development.

 

SOMA 2513: Principles of Marketing

Introduction to marketing concepts; marketing environment; marketing information system; the marketing mix; consumer behaviour; marketing of services; international marketing.

 

SOMA 2523 Operations & Production Management

Topics to be covered include introduction; plant location; facility layout capacity planning; aggregate production planning; materials and inventory management; forecasting of production; quality and quantity control; job design and analysis.

 

SOMA 2542 Company Law I

This involves promotion and pre-incorporation contracts. Registration of Companies, Incorporation and its consequences, Capacity of companies: (a) Ultra vires and intra vires (b) Corporate gifts; Regulation of companies; Shares and rising of capitals. Capital maintenance doctrine, alteration of stated capital; Variation of class rights, Relationship between companies General Meetings and Board of Directors.

 

SOMA 2563 Supply Chain Management

This course encompasses all activities associated with the flow and transformation of material, services, and information from the upstream through to the downstream of the value chain of organizations. It is design to enable students understand and analyze an integrated group of processes to source, make, and deliver products/services that customers value. Emphasis is therefore placed improving activities and costs associated with supplier relationship processes, order fulfillment processes, and customer relationship processes.

 

SOMA 3523: Business Research Methods

Areas covered in this course include; Research Skills, Research methods and Creative thinking, relationship with supervisor and interaction with research groups, Research presentations and Requirements of a good dissertation and Technical writing skills.

 

SOMA 3533 Marketing Management

This course involves issues of staffing, direction and co-ordination of organisational marketing activities. Also to be examined are developments of new products and integration with current activities to meet evolving market needs, sales and advertising in both national and international markets.

 

SOMA 3543 Managerial Economics

This course emphasizes the practice and use of economic principles in solving business problems. Areas covered include uncertainty, forecasting, demand analysis, and capital management.

 

SOMA 2513: Human Resource Management

This course is only the introductory part to managing people in organizations. the course is design to enable students develop knowledge and understanding of the techniques, processes and procedures that affect how people are managed in organizations, the roles of the HR function and its members, and consequently how these approaches and philosophies lead to the fullest possible benefit of the organization and its people. Emphasis is therefore placed on equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to identify and select competent employees, provide employees with up-to-date skills and knowledge, and further be able to retain competent and high performing employees.

 

SOMA 3563 Project Management/Appraisal

This course discusses the practical examination of how projects can be managed from start to the end, including specific emphasis on planning and controlling to avoid common pitfalls. The course will also look at identifying needs, defining requirements, project costing, scheduling, resource allocation, and project politics.

 

SOMA 3583 Public Administration

Areas of study include: The President, Cabinet and Organisation of Government departments and parliamentary control of the administration public corporations: Reasons for nationalization, general characteristics, organisation of the main public corporations, ministerial and parliamentary control, arms of government: executive, legislature, judiciary performance of nationalize industries. The Civil Service in Ghana, the development of the Civil Service, recruitment, training, promotion, management, staff associations, conditions of service. Legal issues in Public Administration in Ghana will be discussed.

 

SOMA 3613 Consumer Behaviour

This course focuses on the contribution of consumer behaviour to effective marketing decision-making. To this end, this course examines the role of the consumers both as purchasers/users of goods and as individuals within a social system. Various theories and models of consumer behaviour are reviewed and their implications for marketing strategy are identified. Upon completion of this course, students should have a better understanding of the consumers as individuals by studying perception, learning and memory, motivation and values, personality, lifestyles, attitudes and attitude change. Additionally the content of this subject focuses upon consumers as decision makers, involving an examination of the entire purchase process.

 

SOMA 3623 Marketing Research

This introduces students to marketing research; overview of the research process and problem definition; Literature review; Research design, Sampling techniques; Analysis and interpretation of data; the marketing research report.

 

SOMA 3633 Selling and Sales Management

This looks at Personal Selling and Salesmanship; typical sales organisation structure; planning the sales force; determining market potential and sales forecasting, sales strategies and policies, determining the size of sales personnel; sales territories; routing and scheduling; the sales budget; sales force management; quota setting and administering, sales control and cost analysis.

 

SOMA 3643 Marketing of Services

Students will be introduce to understand the service product; nature and classification of services; marketing mix and strategies; managing service quality; managing productivity in service firms; cases analysis

 

SOMA 3653 Marketing Planning & Control

The course looks at the planning process, corporate planning and strategy, marketing planning process, nature and component of a marketing plan. The Environmental assessment, developing the plan, implementation and control will be looked at.

 

SOMA 3663 Personnel Systems & Procedures

This course involves the examination of how HR professionals create working environments that allow employee confidence in management and existing procedures. Emphasis will be on grievance, dismissal and disciplinary processes as these have significant impact on overall management-employee relationship. The course will further focus on approaches to employee counseling; best practice guidelines for personnel procedures documentation to ensure effective administration of resources throughout the organization and the deal with second mechanisms management needs to adopt to ensure that employees live up to expectation in the course of doing their jobs.

 

SOMA 3673 Remuneration and Benefits Planning

Total compensation management is a competitive key to attracting and maintaining high performing employees. This course is to enable students appreciate the development and the implementation of performance rewards including both incentive schemes, bonus and commission arrangements; and employee benefits including the pension schemes in Ghana. Students will also be introduced to the operation and maintenance of job evaluation strategies, as well as severance payments. At the end of the course, students are expected to do analysis of comparative remuneration policies and practice within a wide range of business sectors.

 

SOMA 3693 Organisational Behaviour

The course provides an introduction to the management of human behavior in organizations by exploring concepts and information associated with the process of managing organizations and the behavior of the individuals and groups within the organizational setting. It analyzes how cognitive, behavioral, and emotional outcomes contribute to and sustain organizations, identifying processes and methods that can improve the behavior, attitudes, and effectiveness of organizational members.

 

SOMA 3713 Industrial Relations

This course provides an introduction to the field of industrial and labour relations in Ghana, with primary emphasis on the labour-management relationship. Students will be introduced to the basic elements of an industrial relations system, including the participants, their roles and relationships, the social, economic, legal and political environment in which the participants interact, and the process and outcomes of collective bargaining. Students may be exposed to various role playing exercises that are applicable to a career in industrial and labour relations.

 

SOMA 3743 Marketing Strategy

The course emphasizes the application of basic concepts and theories to a variety of marketing issues. The intent of this course is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the process of formulation, implementation, and management of marketing strategy. Using the case study method, students will gain experience in analysis and decision-making skills.

 

SOMA 4503/4603 Thesis/Project I & II

An independent research project carried out under the supervision of a faculty member. Students may produce an 8,000 or 10,000 – word dissertation depending on the nature of the project or research.

 

SOMA 4523 Investment Management

The course aims at preparing students to (a) manage investment portfolios and devise strategies within an EMH framework; (b) price bonds and manage the associated interest rate risk; (c) incorporate the international dimension into investment analysis and handle the associated foreign currency impacts. The course will cover the efficient markets hypothesis, bond valuation, the term structure of interest rates, bond analysis, international asset allocation and international financial markets. Material from both an academic and practical perspective will be used for this course.

 

SOMA 4583 Human Resource Information System

Analysis of information system designed to support planning administration decision-making, and control activities of human resource management. Examination of application such as personnel selection and performance appraisal systems, pay roll and benefit management, and career pathing. Methods for improving communication flows and facilitating interactions are discussed.

 

SOMA 353 Strategic Marketing Management

The strategic perspective in marketing; the strategic marketing process; strategic marketing plan; competition analysis; strategic choices in portfolio management; implementation; strategy and change

 

SOMA 4633: International Marketing

This looks at the nature and scope of international market; market entry strategy; importance of import/export to economic development in Ghana; market structure in international operations; international channels of distribution; pricing of basic commodities and manufactured goods; regional markets; complexities of documentation in international markets; government influences on international marketing.

 

SOMA 4643 Industrial Marketing

This examines the nature of industrial marketing; industrial buyer behaviour; industrial market segmentation; promotion strategy in industrial markets and agricultural marketing.

 

SOMA 4653 Public Relations

This aims to assess the role of the public-relations specialist by devising and implementing a valid public-relations strategy including the use, evaluation and selection of different media. Topics covered include: identification of public relation problem; setting objectives, programme planning and strategy; preparing to communicate, the audience, the written word with particular reference to news releases and writing good copy; selecting the right media, the written word, the spoken word, visual and audio-visual materials, two- and three- dimensional graphics, composite media, sponsorship and educational activities; parliament and voluntary bodies; industry and public relations; crisis management; ethics and law; the PR consultancy; post-assessment of strategy.

 

SOMA 4663 Advertising/Sales Promotion

This introduces students to advertising; media of advertisement; advertising copy; advertising budget; evaluation of advertising effectiveness; scientific advertising agency; scientific advertising and advertising research. The course also looks at the role of communication in marketing and the development of a promotion program. Students will be introduced to a DeskTop publishing (e.g. CorelDraw) and Camera handling (still and video). Students will be required to do group projects.

 

SOMA 4673 Quality Control Management

The course introduces quality management as a contemporary and leading philosophy for modern day business industries and organisation. Topics include the key concepts and principles of total quality management; how to build a total-quality company; workshops; clear company goals; quality employees; setting of a quality council; the importance of projects in a quality management process; analysis training; appreciating a total quality culture; tools and techniques of quality management; company and contrasting different quality cultures from Japan, America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

 

SOMA 4683 Product Management

The course introduces students to product management; types of products and market analysis; product life cycle and development; product branding; packaging and labeling; product pricing decision; product distribution channels; product evaluation and elimination; differentiating and positioning a product.

 

SOMA 4693 Managerial Ethics

The course explores the evidence showing that managers face ethical issues and dilemmas more often than is commonly realized. Indeed, one contemporary view is that the ethical dimension is inherent in all managerial action. In this course particular attention is given to organisational factors such as structure and culture, and to participants coping and learning when face with such situations. The emphasis, in both the content and teaching, is process oriented and developmental, with stress on the integration of ethical and organisational theory with personal experiences of the participants.

 

SOMA 4713: Knowledge Management

The course seeks to analyze how knowledge or intellectual capital can be effectively used as a sustainable source of competitive advantage. The unit aims to explore how knowledge is associated with the effectiveness of learning mechanisms and how intellectual; capital arises from a wide variety of sources, including relationship with customers and suppliers, innovation efforts, company infrastructure and the knowledge and skill of organizational members. It covers both the theory and practical application of key topics relevant to the role and effective exploitation of knowledge within organization.

 

SOMA 4723 Marketing Channels and Communication

This course introduces students to the nature of communication; source, message, receiver; attention, perception and persuasion processes; media/channels of communication mix; the role of other marketing mix in communication; measuring the effectiveness of the promotional program; international marketing communication; barriers to effective communication.

 

SOMA 4733 Event Management

The course explores principles and practices of managing medium- and large-scale events including festivals, conventions, concerts, shows, sporting events, and ceremonies. It Emphasizes organization, site preparation, communications, personnel, and security as well as evaluation and innovation. Special attention will be given to planning for social events such as themed parties, weddings, or balls; planning for fundraiser events; planning recognition events; and planning entertainment events.

 

SOMA 4743: Human Resource Development

Organizations are made up of people, their knowledge, skills, attitudes and interconnections. Without people there is nothing except a legal fiction frozen in time. This course is design to enable students experience the set of systematic and planned activities designed by an organization to provide their members with the necessary skills to meet current and future job demands. Students will be expected to acquire the knowledge and awareness necessary to manage their own learning, build up a portfolio of ideas, and facilitate the learning of others. You will also have the opportunity to practice HRD skills. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to practice HRD skills and use problem solving skills to find solutions for HRD issues.

 

SOMA 4773 Business & Corporate Strategy

The course introduces students to concepts and practices of strategic management in a global competitive environment. Students are exposed to characteristics and elements of strategic management as well as how strategies are developed in organizations. Students will further be taken through how to conduct analysis of the internal and external environment, analyze stakeholders and their expectations, examine integrating Global Compact principles into business strategy, formulate competitive strategies options, influence organizational culture positively and manage change effectively. Students are required to deal with strategic problems through case and field studies.

 

SOMA 4813 Legal Issues in HR

This course considers current issues in employment law that bears most directly on HR administration. This course provides an introduction to the legal principles and major concepts of contract law focusing on the construction and breach of contractual obligations. The course will emphasize the typical contract issues related to employment law, Students will learn the basics of the Ghanaian court system and an introduction to topics on law relating to hiring, promotion and termination, equal opportunity in employment, harassment, workplace security and privacy, occupational health and safety concerns, compensation and employee benefits, immigration, dealing with whistleblowers, and labor-management relations, etc.

 

SOMA 4823 Arbitration and Dispute Resolution

This course explores the nature of conflicts common in personal and organizational life and various techniques to resolve disputes. Conflict management strategies such as reconciliation, negotiations, mediation and arbitration. The course highlights the ramification of the arbitration Act 1960, Act 38 and the Labour Act 2003, Act 651 and their bearing on these matters. Collaborative problem solving and negotiation, and third-party intervention are examined. The course offers "best practices" in designing and integrating dispute resolution programs for the workplace. Students will be paired together to work through hypothetical situations that require cooperative efforts to reach common ground on divisive issues. Students will provide reflective analysis on the challenges encountered in their exercises and provide written feedback to the instructor on insights gained through the negotiation process. Prerequisite SOMA 4813 Legal Issues in HR.

 

SOMA 4853 Financial Management and Control I

The course introduces students to the theoretical and practical framework, which a manager can use to take decisions in the real world. Areas studied include financial objectives and strategies, basic principles of financial management, capital budgeting or investing decisions, financial markets and other issues such as capital rationing and project ranking, investment appraisal under inflationary conditions the effects of taxation on investment decisions and sensitivity analysis. Attention will also be given to contemporary problems in managerial finance.

 

SOMA 4863 Financial Management and Control II

The course covers, Capital Structure, Working Capital management, Mergers, Acquisitions and Takeovers, Financial analysis and business valuation and Foreign Exchange Management. Attention will also be given to risk analysis: cost of capital, cost of equity (CAPM and DVM), cost of debt, WACC, impact of varying capital structures, interest rate and foreign exchange risk, hedging.

 

SOBF 2613 Accounting and Finance I

This course examines the principles and practice of book keeping and the preparation of the final accounts of sole traders, partnerships and clubs including incomplete records. Also to be introduced are the preparation and interpretation of the accounts of limited companies, accounting theory and the structure of the current Ghanaian regulatory system.

 

SOBF 2623 Accounting and Finance II

This is continuation of SOBF 2613 Accounting and Finance I. This course emphasizes: balance sheets, cash flow statements, income accounts and other accounting statements relating to past events and planned activities, their construction, use and interpretation. Other topics are: Accounting conventions, their nature, purposes and limitations; the nature and capital structure of limited companies; the essential differences between Accounting and Economic concepts of income; the basic arguments for, and against, a conceptual framework of accounting; Introduction to budgetary planning and control and to long-range planning and capital investment appraisal. The finance component will focus on Fund flow analysis, sources and use of funds analysis and forecasting future needs of funds.

 

SOAC 1553 Quantitative Techniques

This course is designed to introduce students to Quantitative Techniques and Graphical Methods of Display. Topics to be covered include: Mathematical Techniques; indices and logarithms, percentages and ratios, arithmetic and geometric progressions, graphical presentation of linear functions and quadratic equations, matrices and set theory. Also to be covered include: Financial Mathematics; simple and compound interest, nominal and effective rate of interest, annuities, sinking fund and amortisation, future, present values of cash flow, investment and appraisal method. Another area to be covered include: Data Collection; types of data, data collection methods, questionnaire design, sampling methods, data presentation, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, skewness and index numbers.

 

SOAC 4543 Management Control Systems

This course involves an analysis and design of control systems to facilitate short-term decisions in order to allow management focus on long-term strategic issues. Such systems integrate financial, marketing, production, and other business policies in accomplishing the goals and objectives of an organisation. Accounting techniques are the core of management control systems, and information systems provide necessary links. Some topics covered include impact of tax planning, financial reporting, and internal and external auditing systems.

 

SOEC 2513 Elements of Economics I (Micro)

This course provides an introduction to the theory of consumer demands, theory of production costs; optimal output and pricing determination under conditions of competition and monopoly and allocation and pricing resources. Attention will be given to theories of perfect and imperfect competition.

 

SOEC 2523 Elements of Economics II (Macro)

This course covers such areas as; measuring and explaining overall economics performance; national income and expenditures; money; interest rates; fiscal policy and monetary policy; as an analytical core. Attention will be given to basic theories in Macroeconomics; Stabilisation policy, elements of Growth theory; Inflation; and unemployment.

 

SOMA 3542 Managerial Economics

This course emphasises the practice and use of economic principles in solving business problems. Areas covered include uncertainty, forecasting, demand analysis, and capital management

 

LAFR 1513 French Language I

This introductory course deals with the basic elements of the French language. In so doing, it places equal stress on speaking, listening and writing abilities, using daily-life vocabulary. It includes intensive oral drills designed to teach good speaking habits. This course is enhanced by the use of audio-visual materials whose purpose is to expose the student to contemporary broadly based French culture.

 

LAFR 1523 French Language II

This course, a continuation of French I, is a practical approach to everyday situations through the development of listening, speaking, and writing abilities. Intensive oral drills of a more complex nature designed to achieve fluency, make class attendance compulsory. The reading of short anecdotes on French life provides exposure to written French. This course is enhanced by the use of audio-visual materials designed to expose the student to contemporary French culture.

 

SOED 1533 Communication Skills I

This course seeks to introduce you to academic writing as a meaningful process involving extensive reading, multiple drafting, and revision. Students will do a great deal of reading and writing in and out of class. Students will encounter several ideas and strategies that might sound new to them. They are encouraged to try them out and see their reading and writing skills improve tremendously. Both group and individual activities will be assigned. Each student is required to submit a term paper.

 

SOED 1543 Communication Skills II

This course covers the application of oral and written business communication, involving competency in effective letter writing, preparation of business reports, oral presentation, business meeting (parliamentary) procedures, minutes writing and topic on employment-related communication. Attention will also be given to meeting procedures, interviewing skills and writing of CV’s, and non-verbal communication. This course also deals with the application of basic ethical principles to modern standard business practices. Emphasis will be placed on ethical decision-making in the business arena. Keyboarding skills is a pre-requisite for this course.

 

SOPS 1513 Introduction to General Psychology

The course introduces the psychological study of human behavior and experience. The history, scope and methods of contemporary psychology are described. Topics include: schools of psychology, goals of psychology, principles of learning and memory, applied areas of psychology.

 

SOSB 3523 Fundamentals of Entrepreneurial Management

This course aims to raise fundamental elements of managerial competences needed in the field of entrepreneurship. Lessons will cover topics such as well as areas such marketing and cost accounting. We strive to improve the chances of entrepreneurial success for our students and their ideas for a more sustainable future.

 

SOSB 3563 Exploring Renewable Energy and Climate

This course discusses current renewable energies and their potential uses, with a focus on advanced wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydrogen (fuel cell) technologies. What are the effects of different energy formats and regulatory regimes on current models of climate change? Do you believe that strategies for the sustainable management can answer the challenges of climate change while increasing profitability?

 

SOSB 3582 Life Cycle Assessment

The course discusses the Life cycle Assessment, part of the family of the environmental assessment tools. The module will explain Environmental Systems Analysis and Life Cycle Thinking-we will explore aspects like goal and scope definition, inventory analysis and impact assessment. Which consequence does the greenhouse effect have? What are the effects on our daily lives? Find out about enterprises application, software solutions, options and limitations.

 

SOSB 4513 Sustainable Business Solutions

The course examines the interaction between ecological and economical systems, leading to the Eco-Efficiency Approach. Sustainable industry solutions are demonstrated via international case studies. Students will experience the industry through onsite visits in automotive production, renewable energies, chemical and food industry. A further focus of the course will be the tools for sustainable management such as Environmental Management Systems, Corporate Social Responsibility, Material Flow Management and Cleaner Production.

 

SOSB 4523 Legal and Economic Framework for Sustainable Business

This course will be taken in Germany. Germany, as part of the European Union has been a front runner in creating a regulatory framework encouraging sustainable industrial development. This module will explore the legal aspects of successful environmental management as well as it socioeconomic dimension: How can the regulatory climate influence the development of sustainable industries by regulation and trading emissions, focusing investments on promising technologies and working in an international context while protecting common goods and balancing effects? Students will compare and contrast the knowledge gathered from their learning with what pertains in Africa.

 

GSGR 4500 Development of Business Portfolio

Enables students to reflect on their learning and business experiences throughout the program. As a requirement for graduation, learners are required to submit an extensive Business Portfolio to the Academic Office during the final semester. Business Portfolios encourage and reinforce the importance of lifelong learning and articulate the importance of career development. Learners follow a plan to compile, build and develop a Business Portfolio throughout the entire program. The key features of a Business portfolio include: Resumé; List of one’s competencies (papers, projects, workshops, list of skills and achievements); Brief summary of one’s professional growth and development (career goals and objectives, professional affiliations, resources and contacts); Statement of one’s personal life & business philosophy; Formal workplace observations; Videotapes, audiotapes and photos of the workplace activities, bulletins boards, field trips; Records of strategies and challenges mastered from experience; Clippings, reports, newsletters and articles; Notes and comments received from colleagues, lecturers and administrators; Selection from a business journal that highlights the growth of a business; Self-evaluation and reflection on feedback (include self-reflection and documentation of improvement towards one’s stated goals); Samples of student’s creative and exemplary work and projects; Well articulated business plan; strategic plan, Writing samples (best recent paper); Lists and discussions of participation in community events and activities; Assessment instrument used to date; Other documents related to professional development (publication, grants, honors, awards, and/or certificates). The course will be graded either pass (P) or repeat (R). A pass is required in this course at the end of Level 400. What constitute a pass are (i) at least 90% presence and (ii) timely completion of personal experience record (PER), a journal assessed by the Educational Support Service (ESS).No student can graduate without passing this course.

 

GSGR 4511 Regent Industrial Placement Experience (RIPE)

This course is one of the requirements for earning a bachelor’s degree from Regent. This training offers students experience in varied organizations and agencies where computing applications are relevant. These might include an educational institution, the public service or corporations. This industrial training or internship is for a minimum of 24 weeks and may involve some formal training. The placement may take place during the vacation periods from the first year to the final year. Students are visited regularly by a tutor from either their department .The course will be graded either pass (P) or repeat (R). A pass is required in this course at the end of Level 100 for progress into the second year of the degree programme. What constitute a pass are (i) at least 90% presence and (ii) timely completion of personal experience record (PER), a journal assessed by the Educational Support Service (ESS).No student can graduate without passing this course.

 

SICS 1593 Introduction to Information Technology I

The first part of the course treats Word processing using MS Word (and its equivalent in OpenOffice) functions using a specific word processing software package, which may include insert, delete, cut, paste, find, replace, document formatting, margins, tabs, spell checker, thesaurus, grammar checker, pagination, page numbering, indent, printing, line spacing, justification, centering, view modes, multiple windows, footnotes, endnotes, headers, footers, disk maintenance, folders and document formats. Introduces merge, tables, borders, images and drawing objects. Applications also may include tables, charts, graphics, borders, Clip Art, drawing features, Web-enhanced forms, fill-in forms, columns, outlines, paragraph numbering, styles, macros sort, select, shared documents, table of contents and index. Keyboarding skills required for successful completion. Students will be introduced to MS Excel.

 

SICS 1663 Introduction to Information Technology II

The first part of the course covers E-mail, Electronic Communication and Electronic Presentations for Business Professionals. Students will be introduced to Microsoft Outlook (and its equivalent in OpenOffice) emphasizing efficient use of e-mail, calendar, tasks and notes. The aim of the course is to give students an overview of the foundations underlying design of intelligent systems. The content includes the definition of AI, Standard blind and heuristic search procedures (including genetic algorithms), Theoretical aspects of heuristic search, Knowledge representation formalisms, Reasoning strategies, (eg: resolution Linear and non-linear planning) and Behavioural control architectures. Relations between logical, statistical, cognitive, biological paradigms, basic techniques for heuristic search, theorem proving, knowledge representation, adaptation; applications in vision, language, planning and expert systems will also be discussed. The course will also introduce students to machine intelligence, with special emphasis on expert systems. SICS 4733 Data Communication & Networks

This course is an introduction to the field of data communications and the basic concept in Networking. Topics include: the language of computer networks; fundamentals of data and signals, analog signal, digital signal, the media; conducted and wireless, modems, networks of computers, LAN, WAN, Network devices. Basic modem operating principles, Bandwidth limitations, and alternatives to traditional modems: Channel Service Unit/ Data Service Unit, Cable Modems, ISDN, DSL. It also gives a brief knowledge about Data Link Connections. The course also covers Physical and Data Link protocol issues. The program proceeds to a discussion of switching technologies and Network Layer concerns. The course addresses local area networks with broadcasting and media access control providing the alternative to switching in these environments, and issues associated with network connectivity and the question of interoperability. Topics and content of the course include; using the Open Systems Interconnection terminology, the functions of the Transport Session, Presentation and Applications Layers and the TCP/IP stack used to provide a "real world" example. Students will examine the structure of the Internet and explore the critical role of TCP/IP. Focus will be on such topics as; Physical Layer Protocols, Data Link Layer Protocols, Switching Alternatives, Network Layer Protocols, Local Area Networks (LAN), Interoperability and the OSI Model, TCP/IP and the Internet.

 

SICS 4863 Spreadsheet Modeling for Business Decisions

The course is meant to help students build flexible financial models and perform sensitivity analysis to quickly evaluate the options available to them in a business scenario. There are two main goals for the course: (1) to improve students' ability to think logically about and to structure complex managerial problems, and (2) to improve students' ability to develop Excel-based spreadsheet models (or use Linux - OpenOffice spreadsheet models) that can be used to improve managerial decision-making significantly. The course will be taught almost entirely by example, using problems from the main functional areas of business - Finance, Operations, investments, and Marketing. Students will learn about the two main types of modeling approaches: optimization models, i.e., models that can help find the "best" solution; and simulation models, i.e., models that allow explicit consideration of risk trade-offs associated with alternatives. Students (especially, in Econometric methods) will also be introduced to using spreadsheets to model mathematical relations including Black Scholes, Markowitz’s Efficient frontier, etc. The key emphasis of this course on models that are widely used in diverse industries and functional areas, including finance, accounting, operations, and marketing. Applications will include production planning, supply chain management, foreign exchange and commodity trading, asset-liability management, portfolio optimization, corporate risk management, and yield management, among others. Because of the hands-on nature of the course, many sessions will be held in the computer laboratory. The class sessions will include lecture and then a lab in which students implement the techniques on their own. Out of class assignments will demand that students evaluate a business situation and make and support their decision based on their analysis.

 

SIMS 3533: Introduction to Probability and Statistics

General introduction to the nature of statistics, method of data reduction, descriptive statistical analysis of frequency data, calculation of measure of central tendency and dispersion, moments, skewness and Kurtosis. Elements of combinatorial analysis. Relative frequency interpretation of probability, laws of probability, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, conditional probability and statistical independence. The course also covers objectives and pitfalls of statistical studies. Structure of data sets, histograms, means, and standard deviations. Correlation and regression. Probability, binomial and normal. Interpretation of estimates, confidence intervals, and significance tests. Student will work extensively with MS Excel. They will also be introduced to SPSS and MINITAB at the end of the course.

 

SOGE 1573: Studies in African Development

The aim of this course is to inform students about the state of the socio-politico economic and religious affairs on the continent of Africa and discuss a workable agenda and strategies that can help Africa take control of its own destiny. Topics include among others, the identity of the African, a survey of the geography of Africa and the wealth of the land, the culture (e.g. customs, belief systems, religion, music, festivals, art and symbols, proverbs and saying, tales and story-telling, etc), the place of the trans-Atlantic slave Trade and the development of the continent, prominent Africans in the Diaspora, colonialism, the Africa culture and technology, wars, woes and poverty of the continent, religion as an instrument of development, Africa and the Bible, failure and success of organizations established to rescue Africa from poverty and shame (AU, NEPAD, etc), the contemporary Global interest in Africa’s resources, potential for emancipation. Attention will be given to setting a new agenda and devising strategies that will help Africa gain total independence. Various models of rebuilding nations will be studied (e.g., the Nehemiah strategy).

 

SOGE 1583 Logic & Reasoning

A survey of traditional logic. Classical and contemporary logic are considered with special emphasis upon reasoning and argumentation. Attention will be given to the nature of language and its relation to philosophical problems.
