Regent Vice President Engages with Gbese Traditional Leadership

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the Vice President of Regent University College of Science and Technology, Prof. Samuel Lartey, called for greater engagement between educational institutions, traditional leadership, and communities.

Touching on the importance of synergy between tradition and modernity in national development, he emphasized the need to embrace one's cultural roots, which, according to him, provide a solid foundation for growth.

Prof. Lartey made this call during his speech as Guest of Honour at the Gbese Odadao Festival in Accra.

The festival, held at the Gbese Mantse Palace in Accra, is an annual celebration by the Ga people to mark the lifting of the customary month long ban on drumming and noise-making in the Ga state.

This ban is observed annually to commemorate the Ga ancestors' journey from their ancestral homeland to their current settlements. It is a period dedicated to honoring ancestors, promoting peace, preserving Ga culture, fasting, prayers, and seeking blessings for an abundant harvest.

The ceremony, hosted by the Paramount Chief of Gbese and Adonten of the Ga state, His Royal Majesty Nii Dr. Ayi-Bonte II, featured a vibrant display of Ga culture.

The event brought together various traditional leaders from across the Ga state, including the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo Constituency, Hon. Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, and the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Tawiah Sackey.

“This festival embodies the essence of our traditions, honoring the legacy of our ancestors while fostering unity and community spirit,” said Prof. Lartey.

“As we celebrate, it is crucial to reflect on the synergy between tradition and modernity in our national development. Embracing our cultural roots provides a solid foundation for growth, while integrating modern technology and education propels us towards sustainable progress.”

The Vice President was accompanied by the Head of the Communications Unit at Regent, and the Executive Assistant to Regent’s Vice President, Mr. Ben Larbi.
